Electrical Apprenticeship

What is Apprenticeship: Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation.

Our Program: At the Ventura County Electrical JATC, students attend our school in the evenings while working during the day with an Electrical Contractor. First year apprentices begin at $12.99 per hour + benefits. There are no tuition fees! Apprentices only pay for their school books and hand-tools. Once the apprentice has completed the 5 year program he/she will be upgraded to Journeyman Level status and will receive a Certificate of Completion from the State of California and the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.

Wages and Benefits: Apprentices receive semi-annual wage increases based on successful completion of schooling and on-the-job training. Here is a sample breakdown of wages and benefits:
  • 1st Year Apprentices = $12.99/hr + heath insurance
  • 2nd Year Apprentices = $17.55/hr + insurance and pension
  • 3rd Year Apprentices = $21.26/hr + insurance and pension
  • 4th Year Apprentices = $24.97/hr + insurance, pension and 401K
  • 5th Year Apprentices = $30.54/hr + insurance, pension and 401K
  • Journeyman Electricians = $36.10/hr + insurance, pension and 401K
Availability: Applications are taken year round. Each year we indenture a new class of First Year Apprentices to begin school / work in August. We accept approximately 20 new apprentices each year depending on industry needs.

Applications: Applications are accepted every Tuesday between the hours of 2:00-4:30 PM at our Training Center located at 201 Bernoulli Circle Unit A in Oxnard. The following documents must be provided at the time of application:
1.        Driver’s License
2.        Birth Certificate or Passport
3.        High School Diploma or GED Equivalency
4.        Official, Sealed Transcripts showing one of the following:
A.      One year of high school algebra with a passing grade
B.       One semester of college algebra with a passing grade

Upon submitting an application the applicant will be scheduled for the next available Aptitude Test. The Aptitude Test is a 2 ½ hour exam which covers Reading Comprehension and Algebra, and are scheduled at various times during the year.

Upon completing the Aptitude Test with a passing grade the applicant will be scheduled for an Oral Interview with the Apprenticeship Committee. Applicants will be selected for indenture into the Apprenticeship Program in order of their final ranking. Prior to being indentured, applicants will be required to submit to and pass a drug test.

Notice of Non-Discriminatory Policy:The recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex or age – except the applicant must be at least 18 years of age to apply and at least 18 years of age at time of indenture. The J.A.T.C. does not, and will not, discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability because of the disability of such individual. The sponsor will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and will operate the apprenticeship program as required under applicable law and lawful regulations issued thereafter.
