Magic Camp and the JATC
Updated On: Nov 02, 2010

What is MAGIC Camp? MAGIC (Mentoring A Girl In Construction) Camp is a unique one week summer camp program for female high school students interested in non-traditional construction careers.  Camp is a hands-on training camp which teaches the basic skills of the trades (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, masonry, landscaping, etc.) as well as instruction using hand and power tools. The students also learn how to operate heavy equipment used on construction job sites. Skills training combined with fun projects the girls make with their own hands keep their interest and focus throughout each day.

Local contractors and apprenticeship training programs are on hand to work side-by-side and to answer questions about the lucrative opportunities available to females interested in skilled trades training. Each participant will receive their own tools, toolboxes, and hard hats.

The National Association of Women in Construction’s Ventura/Oxnard Chapter #139 asked the Ventura County Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) if they would be willing to participate in the first Magic Camp in Ventura County.

The JATC had five volunteers to teach the high school girls. Tracy Prezeau from the IBEW International Education Department, Gene Hansmeier the JATC Training Director, Steve Earhart the JATC Assistant Training Director, Kebra Stewart IBEW Member and General Foremen for Taft Electric Company and Jeff Bode JATC Instructor and IBEW Business Representative.

The girl from various High Schools throughout Ventura County spent 8 hours at the JATC Train Center. They were taught basic AC and DC Theory, Electrical Safety, Conduit Bending, Wiring Methods, and a demonstration on current flow through water.

MAGIC Camp is a nationwide program offered by the National Association of Women in Construction, a non-profit organization whose core purpose is to enhance the role of women in construction.

The day was a big success. After a week of being exposed to the different trade, at the graduation of the program, most of the girl agreed that the JATC’s presentation was the best. We look forward to next year’s class.
